Slide, Charlie Brown! Slide! (Volume II from It's A Dog's Life, Charlie Brown) is another classic Peanuts book from the good folks at Fawcett Crest. This one, naturally, features a lot of the trials and tribulations of Charlie Brown's baseball team. They almost win a couple of games - but of course Charlie Brown always manages to blow it. Down one run in the bottom of the ninth, with two men out and the team's best hitter at the plate, Charlie Brown is so desperate to be the hero that he attempts to steal home. He doesn't even make it halfway to the plate, and there he stays throughout the night, his cries of anguish keeping everyone awake. You would think Charles M. Schulz would have let Charlie Brown's team win at least one game at some point. And then, as if losing every game isn't bad enough in and of itself, Charlie Brown is forced to learns his team's statistics for the year from Schroeder (it's not a pretty picture). It's no wonder he has what Violet calls a "failure face."Continuing on the sports theme, this book also features the appearance and eventual outing of "the Mad Punter" who mysteriously kicks footballs all around the neighborhood when no one is around. In other news, Snoopy faces the loss of his home to make way for a freeway. Linus also gets his very first library card, granting him "citizenship in the land of knowledge." Unfortunately, he also suffers from "library fever," so he's too scared to actually go into the library to get a book. He eventually works up the courage to follow in Charlie Brown's footsteps, as Charlie Brown always makes sure to check out a book during National Library Week because "librarians like to feel needed." As a librarian myself, I really got a kick out of all the library-related comics featured in this collection.
